He and Mary Ann had fifteen children, two of whom died as infants.
James died on December 31, 1891 in Shoeburyness of meningitis.
After her husband's death, Mary Ann continued to live at 1 George Street, Shoeburyness, but in straitened circumstances.  It was necessary for her to take in boarders, in the persons of a Mrs. Goose and her five children, who lived, ate and slept in one of the downstairs rooms, which measured 13 x 14 feet.  One of the children got scarlet fever and this brought the over-crowded situation to the attention of the authorities and Mary Ann was taken to court.  She explained that she had tried several times to evict Mrs. Goose, saying "I have been in great distress, with no one to support me but my little boy and what I get from the parish."  Mary Ann was given two weeks to evict the Gooses.  This did not take place within the time frame given as the matter was the subject of a discussion at a later town council meeting.  It was argued that it was the landlord's responsibility to evict the Gooses and the Health Committee should not "persecute a poor widow".
